Create, update and delete a note

Writing a note

  1. Tap the add button in the bottom right corner. The editor opens on a blank note.
  2. Tap the Title field at the top and give it a name, then tap into the body below to start writing.
  3. Tap the back arrow when you are done. The note saves itself — there is no save button.

To add something other than plain text, use the + button in the bottom bar. See Text, links and checklists.

Four shortcuts past the editor

A row of four buttons sits along the bottom of your note list. Each opens a new note with the thing you asked for already set up:

  • Checklist— a note with a to-do list ready to type into.
  • Painting— goes straight to the drawing screen.
  • Voice— a note with the recorder open.
  • Photo— opens the camera to capture a photo into a new note.

You can also long-press the Timeline icon on your home screen for Create Note and Create List shortcuts, or add a Your Notes widget to your home screen.

Getting text into Timeline from elsewhere

  • Share into Timeline— share text, a web page, an image or an audio file from another app and Timeline opens a new note with it in.
  • Copy As Note— select text in any app, tap the copy button and choose Timeline. It saves straight away into your Reading Notebook. See Appearance and settings.

Editing

  1. Tap a note to open it.
  2. Make your changes.
  3. Tap the back arrow to save.

To choose what happens on the way out, use Exit in the editor's menu. It asks How would you like to exit? and gives you Save, Exit w/o saving or Cancel.

Undo and Redo sit in the editor's top bar, so you can step back through a change you did not mean to make.

Moving blocks around

A note is made of blocks — a paragraph, a checklist, a photo, a drawing. Each one has a drag handle on its left. Drag it to reorder, or use Reorder in the editor's menu to see the whole list and move things from there.

Deleting

There are three ways, depending on where you are.

  • Long-press a note to select it, then choose Delete from the menu. It moves to the Trash, and Timeline offers an Undo straight away.
  • Open the note and choose Delete from the editor's menu.
  • Select several notes at once and delete them together.

Deleting is not permanent straight away — see Archive, pin and color for the Trash and how to restore from it.

Duplicating

Long-press a note, or select several, and choose Clone. The copies land at the top of your list, which is the quickest way to reuse a note you want to keep.

Looking up a word

Select a word in the editor and a ? button appears in the top bar. Tap it for the meaning, how it is pronounced, and examples — plus similar and opposite words.
